NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT :

The project is to establish a new multidisciplinary classroom and office facility with an area of approximately 28 000m2 for the University of Botswana on the Gaborone campus.

The multi-storey building houses offices, classrooms, laboratories and supporting facilities.  The site is adjacent to the existing Library building and existing hostels on the site are to be demolished to enable construction of the new facility.

The existing sub soil conditions are problematic with an extremely high water table and poor founding material.  Piling is considered the most suitable option on this site.

The structure is a reinforced concrete framed building with maximum slab panel modules of 9m x 7,5m.  The favoured scheme is a conventionally reinforced 215mm deep slab between 1190mm wide by 500mm deep (overall) beams spanning 9 metres.  Lateral stability is provided by shafts and shear walls.

The project is complete and building handed over and occupied by the University of Botswana.
